Are crypto exchanges regulated for AML?
Yes — almost universally. Australia: digital currency exchange providers must register with AUSTRAC since 3 April 2018. United States: convertible-virtual-currency exchangers and administrators are MSBs and must register with FinCEN. European Union: crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) are obliged entities under AMLD5, AMLD6, the AMLR, and are subject to the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) in force from 30 December 2024. United Kingdom: cryptoasset firms must register with the FCA under the MLRs since 10 January 2020.
